Musikkens Hus is one of Aalborg’s most distinctive cultural landmarks, situated on the city’s waterfront overlooking the Limfjord. The idea for a major music and cultural centre dates back to 1986, when local citizens established Foreningen Musikhusets Venner to promote the project. After years of fundraising and planning, an international architectural competition was held, and in 2003 the project by the renowned Austrian architectural firm COOP HIMMELB(L)AU, led by architect Wolf D. Prix, was selected.
Construction began in 2010, and Musikkens Hus officially opened on 29 March 2014, with an opening concert attended by Queen Margrethe II. The building was conceived not only as a concert venue but as a meeting place for music, education, research and cultural exchange. Its striking sculptural form reflects Aalborg’s industrial heritage while opening towards the Limfjord. The educational and administrative areas form a U-shaped structure around the central Concert Hall, symbolically embracing the heart of the building.
The architecture also places exceptional emphasis on acoustics and interaction: the Concert Hall is constructed according to a box-in-box principle to isolate it acoustically, while its distinctive walls feature approximately 160,000 hand-applied acoustic elements. Today, Musikkens Hus is home to several musical and educational institutions and serves as an important cultural meeting point for Aalborg and the wider North Jutland region.
Therefore, Musikkens Hus provides a particularly fitting setting: a contemporary landmark where architecture, music, knowledge and international cultural exchange come together.
